With Chickenfoot in the midst of a brief overseas tour, the members of the band have been hitting the promotional trail, doing rounds of interviews in support of their latest release, ‘Chickenfoot III.’ And you know what that means: plenty of questions about the new Van Halen record. Chickenfoot singer (and ex-VH vocalist) Sammy Hagar has never been shy about expressing his opinions when it comes to his former bandmates, and he didn’t pull any punches when the subject came up again during a recent interview with Radio Metal.
Though he insisted that his recent focus is on being more positive — and responded to an early question by saying simply “If you don’t have anything good to say about someone, you’d better shut up” — Sammy eventually expressed more disappointment with Van Halen’s new music, arguing that the band has lost its way creatively.
“I think they chose to take the easy route and take some of their old stuff and and re-record it instead of writing new songs,” argued Hagar. “Who is Van Halen today? I don’t know, I don’t think the fans are going to be happy with it…To me it makes a strange statement, it kind of says ‘We don’t have anything, we’re not a band anymore, we’re not creative.’ Isn’t it a strange statement to you?”
“I think there’s zero inspiration and zero creativity. If there was any, they would write new songs,” he continued. “When Chickenfoot got together for our first album, we were four new guys and we got together and wrote ten, twelve songs and made an album. When we decided to do our second album, we didn’t go back and take the two songs that were left over from the first album, we wrote all brand new songs. We’re new people, we’re inspired.”
Asked if he agreed with Michael Anthony’s statement that Chickenfoot would happily do some shows with Van Halen, Hagar chortled, “Hell yes! Are you kidding? Right now, for free. They wouldn’t even have to pay me.”
From Hagar’s perspective, it’d be a pretty lopsided bill: “If you take Joe versus Eddie, you take Dave versus me, Wolfie versus Mikey, Chad or Kenny versus Al… I mean, come on! You know what I mean? Man for man, who can sing the best? Dave or I, today? Who can play the best? Joe or Eddie, today? Who could play or sing the best? Wolfie or Mikey?”
So far, our readers seem to be siding with Hagar in at least one way, with Chickenfoot’s current single ‘Different Devil’ enjoying a comfortable lead in the Readers’ Poll pitting it against Van Halen’s comeback track ‘Tattoo.’

God, he's such a child.
Sam Hagar sounds like a bitter, bitter man.
Fuck Hagar!![]()
I love it when that red fucker gets his undies in such a knot. You KNOW this shit is killing him!!!!!
I'm a spark on the horizon!
ZACKLY!!!
He's been relegated to the back room...AGAIN!!!
I don't know where I'm going, but I'm on my way!
Sam Hagar is nothing but a chickenfootnote in the history of Van Halen at this point. Dave's return makes sure of that. On a VH forum, someone brought up this great point, "How often did Sam get asked to play classic Van Halen songs in concert? Sam hated playing those songs, but he knew he had to and he did sing a few of them. Now then, how often does Dave get asked to sing Hagar songs? I bet it never happens and Dave wouldn't do it even if he was asked. He knows he doesn't have to because a huge majority of the fans don't want to hear that crap anymore." The fans are getting what they want now.
I posted an interesting statistic on another forum. I added the views from all 6 Chickenfoot singles/videos on their official youtube page. The sum of views for all 6 of their singles didn't even match the total plays from the official Van Halen "Tattoo" video from their page. That tells everything you know to know about why Sammy won't quick running his mouth about VH. It's the only way he can get anyone to listen to him!! It's painfully obvious that the new has worn off of Chickenfoot and nobody gives a damn about Sam anymore outside of his VH connection.
As much as I'd love for Dave to rip him apart in a way that only the wit of Diamond Dave could do, I really hope that he continues to absolutely ignore Spammy. That'd probably drive Spammy more crazy anyway. Let him realize just how irrelevant he is.
It's like the Sam & Dave tour all over again...Spammy McGaygar banging on Dave's bus with the Open E String Diddler begging for him to step on the same stage WITH them!
The SILENCE is DEAFENING!
Out of respect to his bandmates...I'm pretty sure that Dave won't say anything about the Van Hagar singer in the open press. I mean you don't hear the Van Halen Brothers bashing Dave's solo catalog anymore so order has been restored and the weak links have FINALLY been removed from the band.
Dave doesn't have to sing any of the Van Hagar or Ga_y Halen tunes because in comparison they sucked. The fans called it from the git go but Pride being a muthaphuquer wouldn't allow them to admit the mistake. I'm POSITIVE that the last tour with Spammy sealed the fate of both of them. Playing to near empty houses...giving away thousands of tickets to make up the difference and fans screaming for the obvious!
and I said...ROTH ON!
I don't know where I'm going, but I'm on my way!
Shammy should zip it.
I'm really sick to death of the Ronald McDonald of RR talking so much.
Spammy Who?
umm..you know...
he looks like....uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...
sounds like...........
hmmm.....Spammy who?

Ok...the more I think about this...I'll play along with Spammy McGaygar.
Lead Singer
David Lee Roth - THE quintessential epitomy of what a lead singer should be. A ringleader of sorts that can command the crowd and keep the band focused. The ability to hit more than one register and best be able to play an instrument. I cannot think of a better representation of a lead singer but Mick Jagger and Steven Tyler come close!
Sammy Hagar - Someone that's bumped his way from one band to another and wiped his ass with all of them. Nobody ever has a nice thing to say about him once he's gone. His solo material did contain some decent songs, yeah I said decent...not good...not great. He did sell some records on his own so he does have some talent just not in the lead singer category. I'd gladly take DLR's solo discography over his every day of the week!
Winner - David Lee Roth
Guitarist
Eddie Van Halen - Next to Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page there hasn't been a guy this riveting with the 6 strings. Hate the man, love the music. His sound is unmistakable. You KNOW when you hear an Eddie riff.
Joe Satriani - Next to Yngwie Malmsteen he's the greatest guitar masturbater of all-time. Just like his other claim to fame...Grammy nominations...he's 2nd place. His solo music is out and out terrible and lacks any real depth or ability to make it listenable a 2nd time. Seeing him live is just painful because on top of the God awful weedle-weedle-wee screeching gerbil sounds you have to see him make these faces where you can't tell if he's Springsteen hitting a high note, shooting off a load or if someone drove a GTO up his ass at 90 miles an hour!
Winner - Not Joey...once again he takes #2 to a new stench
Drummer
Alex Van Halen - All I'm going to say about this is listen to "Hot For Teacher". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmsXZaFEBME
Ok, done? You can get off your knees now. See what I mean?
Chad Smith - Look what he does for RHCP is awesome. He keeps the time and it's respectable. He really is a good drummer BUT he's nowhere near the caliber that Alex is and if you pressed him on it I bet even he would admit that Alex is better. Has anyone ever seen Chad and Will Ferrell in the same room...at the SAME time?
Winner - Alex Van Halen
Bassist
Michael Anthony - Out of everyone listed so far they've all had their chances to play outside of their own bands and do something creative EXCEPT the man I affectionaly call the Open E-String Diddler. There's a reason why I call him that. It's because for a large part of what he does, that's EXACTLY what he's doing! He had his flashes here and there with his run under the Van Halen's wings but he didn't write a single song on his own. Not one. Crap, look even Ringo Starr when he was a Beatle got a song an album!!! Then there's people that swoon, "Oh but he brought the harmonies!". Really? Ever listen to the Beach Boys? Not even close. This guy is akin to Spammy McGaygar in that he squandered years doing nothing in one of the most prolific American Rock bands of all-time being a bit player and taking a payday.
Wolfgang Van Halen - I only have the one album to go on, but that made me a believer. I saw them on the last tour and he brought it and the kitchen sink. He was able to be heard in the mix and not washed away on bass and with vocals. He made the pedestrian buffoon with the Jack Daniels bass look like a guy his age and he looked like a professional that was confident playing in his!
Winner - Wolfgang Van Halen
So...Sammy is a liar. Anyone got anything better to add to what I put up...add it.

Ronnie Montrose easts a 12 gauge potato chip, Eddie's a drunk. The common denominator? Sammy....
